Old Jewish Cemetery Dessau #4

Jewish Cemetery Dessau 4 - I

Jewish Cemetery Dessau 4 – I

The Jewish Cemetery in Dessau was vandalized in 1938. Many of its grave markers were smashed in or ripped out. The Soviet city commander ordered it restored later, but grave markers that could not be assigned to a particular grave were incorporated into the cemetery wall. The cemetery is still being used, although the old part looks like it is only being visited occasionally. Grave makers still lay toppled over, some with broken face plates. It breaks your heart looking at it, looking at the wall lined with the ones that couldn’t be assigned to a particular grave.
