It’s strange that for years, growing up in Germany, I haven’t even been to places in my immediate backyard. In March of 2015 I spent three weeks in Karlsruhe/Germany on some family business and knowing that I wouldn’t be back for a while, decided to make up for lost time. Karlsruhe has a castle as its centerpiece, like many other German cities, and this was the first time I walked up its tower. The journey upwards starts with a solid-stone spiral staircase, then up a square flight of stairs lined with a metal guardrail, and finally again onto another wooden spiral staircase. The change from the circular to the square and back to the circular, combined with the change of materials, just beckoned to be captured as abstracts.
