Back from Germany …and Busy Editing

April 17th, 2009

Came back from Germany yesterday (hence the lack of posts… barely got around to tweeting) with several gigabytes worth of photographs. Currently busy editing these and backlogged pictures from before.

In the meantime, check out http://www.tacheles.de (the site is sort of bilingual). This is the craziest place I’ve seen. According to what I read, it used to be a department store built in 1909 that was very heavily damaged in the war. Scheduled to be knocked down – OK: blown up – in 1990, it was saved by a group of squatting artists, who continue to work there. It literally consists only of the first row of rooms on each floor that were closed off towards the back, a vast and vacant lot behind it with tons of open-air sculptures and it’s covered with graffiti wherever there was room.

Of course, the City of Berlin is not supporting the group financially (anymore), and so they’ve apparently been sailing on the brink of bankruptcy for a while. Anyway, not your typical sight, and some of the art was downright awesome.

And it sure was a photographer’s paradise!
