@Bren Thank you for leaving a comment! I, too, agree that it was unfair to make an example of Rudik - taking out the sneaker was something he could have done in the darkroom as well.
The uneasiness dealing with digital photography and its possibilities kind of resembles the ambiguity with which the Internet is treated. Some folks want to regulate EVERYTHING, some just want it to develop on its own... But this was definitely throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Thanks for a very interesting article. As someone who 'grew up with' analog photography (my late father was a photographer/artist and I spent much of my childhood in the darkroom :-))and who only converted to digital in the last few years, your points are very well made. The conclusion, the 3 rules, should be the line in the sand. The rest is manipulation, compositing, digital art or whatever. I do feel it unfair that Stepan Rudik lost his prize, his photo was excellent.

With regard to Black & White, I go back to using film on those occasions, using a Rolleiflex TLR. No matter what I try in digital I still find, as you have, that there is "something lacking". Sadly, the costs of processing and printing are becoming very high for film now.

Again, many thanks for the article.
Best wishes, Bren.

Hey. This thing looks as if it wants to eat us! Great picture. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry to miss tonight, but weather held us up as we returned from Mt. Vernon. Keep me on the list.

Hallo Roland!

LG,

Sofie
