Black & White Portraits With Toy Camera Effect
I’m tentatively giving these the title “Zoe Comes Home”. The house these were shot in basically determined the look, which is a digital toy camera effect for those who’ve never seen this kind of photography. I’m hoping to do more of these, but not necessarily around this house.
These photographs are highly experimental for me, nothing like I’ve ever attempted to shoot. As I said, the house was the inspiration. It is being broken down as we speak, and the inside was just incredibly, horribly dirty, all messed up and everything imaginable ripped out. Yet, at the same time there seemed to be messages all around the house, likely left by its previous owners, and from the first moment I came by this place I was wondering what its history was, who had lived there, and what it must have been like.
And as it so often happens with me, one thing led to another, and here’s a series of 13 pictures that came out of the process (well, a few of them anyway). I was aiming for documentary-style photographs, and the toy camera effect in my opinion underlines the mood this place inspired in me. I seem to work on themes lately (not all of which have been produced or posted) that have to do with substance abuse, messed-up childhoods etc., so this is a perfect fit.
